FAQ: How do I use i-Ready Growth Monitoring to inform EOY predictions and improve my intervention?

i-Ready Growth Monitoring assessments allow teachers and administrators to monitor the progress of students to determine if they are likely to meet annual growth goals. Guided by the data available in i-Ready Growth Monitoring reports, teachers can adjust their instruction strategies or change the level of intervention to ensure students stay on track to meet their growth goals.

How does i-Ready Growth Monitoring work?

Growth Monitoring is designed to answer the questions, “What is my student’s projected end-of-year growth?”  and, “What is the likelihood that my student will meet his/her growth goals?” By using all of the data from Growth Monitoring and Diagnostic assessments, we provide the best prediction of where a student will ultimately place at the end of the year. Using regression analyses and data from previous years, our research team developed a methodology that reliably predicts student outcomes at the end of the year. Educators can use these predictions to determine whether or not students are likely to reach their growth goals, or if greater levels of intervention are needed.

The Growth Monitoring feature in i-Ready includes Growth Monitoring assessments that are applicable for Grades K–8 in reading and mathematics. These “Growth Checks:”

  • Have approximately 20 questions
  • Are adaptive, so they will adjust up and down based on the student’s responses, just like the Diagnostic
  • Start at the last assessment’s levels (whether Growth Monitoring or Diagnostic)

Note: The first Growth Check starts where the student placed on their Diagnostic.

Which Growth Monitoring reports do I need to be familiar with?

i-Ready has three Growth Monitoring reports:

  • Growth Monitoring Status report lets you monitor student completion during a Growth Check administration.
  • Growth Monitoring Results (Class) report allows you to compare students’ Projected Growth to their growth measures and the likelihood they will reach their growth goals.
  • Growth Monitoring Results (Student) shows you the student’s end-of-year projected score, how likely the student is to reach his or her growth measures by the end of the year, and the score on each Growth Monitoring and Diagnostic assessment.

Use the Growth Monitoring Results reports monthly (after three months of data) to identify students who are somewhat likely or somewhat unlikely to meet their growth goals. Identify the students you are most concerned about and prioritize instruction or intervention. You may need to dig further to find out why and to ultimately adjust your approach or level of intervention. Digging deeper may also include using other monitoring tools and looking at other information in i-Ready.

Adjusting Instruction Based on Monitoring Data

Once you identify students who are not on track for meeting end-of-year growth goals, you can take steps to plan instructional adjustments to get students back on track. This can include:

  • Scheduling adjustments for time spent in teacher-led or Online Instruction
  • Moving a student to a different instructional group or intervention level
  • Assigning specialists or students to specific intervention programs
  • Allocating specific curriculum tools and resources to schools or classes based on level of student need

At the individual student level, i-Ready data can help pinpoint the instructional adjustments that are needed to get a student on track. For example, monitoring student lesson alerts using the Online Instruction report can help identify which students are struggling with specific i-Ready Online Instruction lessons. Data in the Diagnostic Results (student) report provide specific recommendations, detailing each student’s Can Dos and Next Steps based on his or her unique needs.
