Create Weekly Systems with i-Ready

Linda Fountain, an educator in Georgia, uses i-Ready routines and systems in her math classroom. She explains, "I teach math. In the beginning of the year, after my students complete their fall Diagnostic, I review their data (which I also do in the spring). I then confer with each student. Each student has a personalized data sheet with goals. I discuss the data with my students and they set two goals. One goal is a growth goal and the other is their achievement target. The students write a SMART goal about how they are going to improve. My students work on i-Ready at least 45 minutes a week. For students needing intervention, they work on it 90 minutes each week. Each day, students work on i-Ready. They either complete a short lesson or 15–20 minutes of a long lesson, which is one that takes them more time to understand. I confer with my students throughout the week. Every other week, my students complete a math growth check. My students then complete a data chart in the form of a line graph. For each growth check, they plot the data and look at the pattern. As part of their mindset lessons, we discuss perseverance and a growth mindset. The students learned that sometimes we go through dips, but we must persevere and come out of that dip. When they reflect on their data within the line graph they make "next steps." I also reward my students for time on task and percent of lessons passed. We strive for an 80% average or higher on lessons each week. At the beginning of each week, I post the students names and we celebrate by clapping and cheering. Students also earn positive points for improvement."
