Encourage Students to Create Goals

Patti Chlepas, a teacher in West Virginia, helps students create their own learning goals. She explains, "I co-teach in a fifth grade math class, where my co-teacher printed out the i-Ready reports for the start of the school year and encouraged students to create goals for themselves. The students talked about ways to improve their i-Ready scores like paying better attention and checking and re-checking their answers. They then put their goals in a special folder so that they could monitor their growth throughout the year. The best part about this was the discussion, which encouraged students to think about what is important in life and ways that learning to improve study skills now can help each student to grow throughout their school year."
