Hold an i-Ready Olympics

Jennifer Wright, a teacher in Missouri, noticed her students were rapidly clicking their way through i‑Ready lessons instead of focusing on answering questions correctly. She explains, "I was determined to change this and I knew that I had to find what motivated them to change their habit. I didn't want them doing this on their upcoming Diagnostic. Knowing that my students are pretty competitive, I thought, 'What better way than to make a competition out of it?' The best part was they were only competing with themselves. I decided to jump onto the excitement of the upcoming Olympics and have an i-Ready Olympics of my own. Here is the process: I run a report for the previous week for i‑Ready Mathematics and Reading lessons they passed. Every student who passed 100% of lessons gets “awarded” a gold medal, 90–99% get a silver, and 80–89% get a bronze medal. I play the Olympic music as the awards get distributed. On Friday they turn the medals back in to have the process start again that Monday. It is nice to recycle the medals every week! Students wear them all around the school and I have asked staff to praise them for their hard work. They also get to put a star sticker next to their picture on a poster that I have outside our door for each medal they have earned. My class has loved this and I have seen tremendous growth in them. One particular student who I am so excited about was failing every lesson, though he was very capable he just wasn't motivated. Since the i-Ready Olympics have started, he has passed EVERY lesson! I was happy that the majority of my students took their time on the Diagnostic and stopped rushing!"
