Keep Students Engaged by Earning i-Ready Brag Tags

Laura Malone, a teacher in Louisiana, uses i-Ready Brag Tags in her classroom. She explains, "I am using brag tags in my classroom as a way to recognize academic and behavioral achievement. This was my first year using i-Ready Math. We were told that in order to see growth and success, students need to use i-Ready for a minimum of 45 minutes a week. My i-Ready Math day is every Wednesday. Students use the entire class time to work in i-Ready as I monitor them. During the last 10 minutes of class, students call out how many lessons they have passed since last week (they also do i-Ready in a computer lab once a week). To keep them engaged, I reward lessons passed in increments of 5, so when they pass their next 5 lessons, they earn an “I passed 5 math lessons!” brag tag. The kids get to come up to the board and put their brag tag on their ring. I make the tags in different colors, and the kids love to collect all the colors. When they pass 25 lessons, they get a special silver brag tag. No one has passed 50 lessons yet, but that brag tag will be gold. It has become a competition to see who can get the most tags (and of course that means passing the most lessons!), and the kids get to wear them on special occasions like Awards Day. We also use this system for i-Ready Reading."
