Personalize Learning Based on Diagnostic Data

Sarah de Sousa, a teacher in California, personalized learning for her students based on data using i‑Ready Diagnostic. She explains, "After the first Diagnostic, I looked at each student's profile data to personalize their learning. I looked at what they knew and what they needed to learn in order to grow. After I analyzed the data, I planned lessons every week that were tailored to each of their needs. During station rotation, each student had different work to help them grow. Furthermore, every week I met with each student once or twice to 1) go over their Diagnostic results, 2) set goals, and 3) progress monitor. We monitored progress by seeing how many lessons they passed each week and whether they were growing based on growth monitoring data. We also discussed what they can do if they did not pass a lesson. This pushes the responsibility of learning on the student instead of the teacher. I loved seeing their involvement and excitement in data goal setting. My students' results improved from Diagnostic 1 to 2. In fact, my >1 grade level students' number decreased by half and the on-grade level students increased by half. This was true in both Reading and Math. This has surpassed the number of on-grade level students I had last year. Last year, I ended the year with seven students on grade level. Now, with personalized learning based on the Diagnostic data, I have 13 on grade level and it is only trimester 2! I truly believe that the personalized learning, data tracking, and talks have been beneficial for my students' growth."
